World Environment Day 2008
World Environment Day is coming up soon - June 5th. This year’s slogan is “Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy.”
The goal behind this year’s slogan:
“Recognizing that climate change is becoming the defining issue of our era, UNEP is asking countries, companies and communities to focus on greenhouse gas emissions and how to reduce them. The World Environment Day will highlight resources and initiatives that promote low carbon economies and life-styles, such as improved energy efficiency, alternative energy sources, forest conservation and eco-friendly consumption.”
World Environment Day started back in 1972, but not as many people seem to know about it as say, Earth Day. Each year a new area hosts major events related to World Environment Day. This year the host is Wellington, New Zealand. Each year tons of people and areas register their World Environment Day activities; in 2007 more than 100 countries registered (so can you).
