Unique Sustainable Wooden Wedding Invitation
May 24, 2009 by Jennifer
I know I talk about Night Owl Paper Goods all the time here, but being that I love them, and being that it’s green wedding month here at THF, I can’t NOT post their amazing eco-birch wedding invites, reply cards, and party invites.

The eco-wedding line at Night Owl Paper Goods is beautiful, unique, and will kick your green wedding off right. The wedding line of products are made of eco-friendly sustainably harvested yellow birch wood. The wood grain varies, which means your invites will be super unique & lovely. Wedding cards includes custom text, or a fill-in section (yes, you can write on this wood), and outer envelope.

- zinnia • peacock blue reply card
- Save the Date * Kelly Rosette
- everlasting wheat circle wedding or party invitation
Pricing is the only downside of these cards. Being so unique they go for $3 to $6 each, so I’m guessing these are MUCH better for a small eco-wedding. If you’ve got the budget though, these are simply the coolest material cards for a green wedding you can get. If going with touchable cards is not your deal check out:

Those are awesome! I am going to look at them. Hmm, I wonder if I could convince dh to get married again.
These are pretty and all, but I fail to understand how wood invitations, no matter how sustainably harvested, are better for a “green” wedding than recycled paper. I am cringing thinking about the shipping weight involved in sending the wood to be processed and for it then to be sent to the company to be printed, then mailed to the bride to be addressed and then mailed yet AGAIN to the recipients. While the recipients may toss a paper invite in the recycle bin, I think a lot of people would be dumbfounded about what to do with a wooden invitation, and it’s unrealistic to think every single wedding guest is going to save it as a keepsake. If you’re really concerned about the earth and you have that kind of budget just for invitations, why not just get some recycled paper or seeded paper invites for a lower cost and donate the rest of the money to an environmental organization?
@Sarah – good points which is why I recommend digital invites first and recycled or seeded paper too (in other posts). However, some will always want to send something physical and sustainable wood is a pretty unique choice and better than non-recycled paper with toxic inks. I totally agree about the shipping though – it’s gotta cost a ton to send something large like this.
