The Gift of Nothing

February 17, 2008 by Jennifer

The Gift of Nothing by Patrick McDonnell is a simple little book that describes the search for a perfect gift. Finally the searcher realizes that all along, it’s really the gift of time spent together, that matters most. A nice easy story for young children about how stuff isn’t as big a deal as our overly commercial society makes it out to be. I’m not sure that was the original sole intent of this story, but that’s message kids will get. Time is better than stuff.

Everyone I know who has read this book adores it. Check it out at your local library.

Is it ironic that I think this book would be a good gift for my nephew?

Is he the one with the non-informed parents? Or was that another kid you know. Also, I know, I always feel a little odd giving stuff like this as a gift – because it does somehow weird the message up. Still, how else will some kids (parents / people) learn?
