Ten tips for an easy green picnic or green potluck
Today the Lifestyles Channel is holding a potluck / picnic of sorts. Each of the channel blogs will be somehow discussing potlucks and picnics today - a favorite recipe, maybe some planning tips. Here at Tree Hugging Family, we’ll be looking at how to hold a green picnic.

- Pack green silverware and plates. That means real dishes or at the very least a smart eco-alternative.
- Bring at least one meatless main dish.
- Aim for a healthy organic picnic.
- Block the sun with eco friendly sunglasses.
- Toss an earth friendly Frisbee.
- Don’t forget the human safe bug spray and sunscreen.
- Forget stuff like balloons to mark your picnic spot. Use something safer for the environment like paper streamers. If you must have balloons make sure you don’t allow them to fly free.
- Take something fun along for water play.
- Don’t take too much stuff - if you’re out in nature, explore, and learn about the area, before relying on tools and games. Make sure to take a map, and stick with your pals.
- Take it with you: Don’t pollute nature. When the fun is over, put out all fires, pack up, and haul out all your picnic trash, and that includes food. Human leftovers are no good for animals.

Tip number ten is a good one. We have a campsite in the mountains and it’s camping. No fireplace, garbage cans, anything. Our motto there is “pack it in, pack it out”. If it can’t be added to the fire at night it gets taken out with us.

Can I just say what a beautiful image that is? It makes me want to run outside for a picnic right now :D
Tip #9 is my favorite. I can’t tell you how many times I overpack when I leave the house, even when it’s just a small tote bag full. I barely need any of that stuff even though it would be great “just in case”. Travel light!
