Idbids is a brand new toy with a purpose. I wish I could say they’d be out by Easter – because they’d make some great eco Easter gifts, but it appears that consumers won’t be able to snatch one up until summer 2008. Although wholesalers can start ordering mid-March so you may be able to find one sooner.

What they are:

The Idbids; Scout, Lola and Waverly are lovely little friends for children that help kids to understand the role they play in keeping the planet happy and healthy. According to Idbids, LLC, these toys help to show kids that they can help out, “One iddy biddy step at a time.”

From Idbids:

“The delightful Idbids teach children ages 3 and up that it can be heaps of fun when you’re keen on being green. They do it through a wonderful storybook journey of discovery. By taking iddy biddy steps along with his or her Idbid of choice, the child learns about the Earth and what he or she can do to make a difference. (For example, if you turn off the water while brushing your teeth all week, you’ll save more than a bath tub full of water.)

After reading the book (for the first of many times), there is a field guide and simple check list to help children continue to take their own iddy biddy steps every day. Once the field guide is complete, the child – with the help of a grown-up – can come to this site to tell Scout. As a reward, Scout will create a personalized Idbids Certificate of Completion that you can print to celebrate the iddy biddy steps the child took to help keep our Earth happy, healthy and green.”

Depending on which friend your child chooses a different topic is discussed:

Scout: Air and pollution.

Lola: Trees, plants, and flowers.

Waverly: Water – oceans, seas, rivers, and lakes.

So, it sounds highly interactive. Sort of like immersing your little one in green. The toy comes in a set with the book and guide. Following is what each kit will come with.

“One 9” Idbid plush toy – Scout the cloud, Lola the flower or Waverly the water drop – made with 100% organically grown Egyptian cotton

An organic cinch sack for the child to wear

Storybook printed on recycled paper with
eco-friendly inks

Field guide printed on recycled paper with
eco-friendly inks”

I love the cute little friends (maybe Waverly best). I also love the whole interactive combined with play aspects of this toy. An excellent way to introduce the littles to green living ideas.

Look for them soon and check out Idbids to see a sneak peek and to sign up for their email list.

Which friend would your child (or you) like best? I think Cedar would like Scout best.
