Green Videos to Adore – Green Videos for Kids

Here at Tree Hugging Family, I’ve shown a fair share of green videos. I thought I’d collect some of my faves, and re-post them, in case you missed some.
First – a round-up for the kiddos…
This first video is hands down my most favorite recycling video for kids, by kids (ok older teens) of all time. These kids are so flipping funny and so on target with the music and how the video was cut. I laugh every single time I watch it.

What tofu does when you walk away… I love this video – it’s pretty silly. My son liked it, …read more

Tree Hugging Family Soap of the Week

Yeah, I know we don’t have a soap of the week here. But this week we do…

Way to send the message home right? I love it. Also, it’s made with organic aloe vera juice so your bubbles will be just as ethical as your actions.

How You Save Water

How You Save Water

Thanks for participating in last month’s water conservation poll. We’ll have a new one in the sidebar soon.
What measures do you take to conserve water?
I’m not listing each answer, but here are some highlights:
• Most popular answer (aside from “At least 5 of the above”) was turn off water while washing dishes and brushing teeth with 15% of the vote.
• Eating little or no meat claimed 7% of the vote. It takes a lot of water to get a package of beef to the store. . .
• Compost instead of using the garbage disposal and wear clothes more than once …read more

Help me out here – which is worse – wasteful trash or wasting water?

Help me out here – which is worse – wasteful trash or wasting water?

Remember when I posted about ice pop molds? Well, I got three sets of the Tovolo Molds, and we really like them. It’s the first time we’ve had single style molds, and the first summer we’ve been completely ice pop trash free. We did used to make homemade pops, just not as often because the multiple molds (i.e. molds stuck together were problematic).
In any case, since this is water month, and I’ve been water slacking, I figured I’d bring up our one and only issue with these molds. You still have to use a decent amount of water in order …read more

Saving Water Outside

Saving Water Outside

The last time I got assaulted by a misguided water sprinkler was this spring. It was aimed at a concrete sidewalk, and I happened to be walking by at the same time as an unruly dog that jumped on and scratched me. Maybe he didn’t like the wasted water either.
Want to water less? Of course, you should never water your sidewalk or driveway, but other than that:
•Reduce evaporation by watering before 10 am or at night.
•Also, avoid watering on windy days.
•And choose plants appropriate for your climate. SavingWater.org has a detailed Plant List that includes drought-tolerant trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses …read more

Water Water Everywhere

Water Water Everywhere

If you haven’t caught on it’s water month here. You knew that right? In any case, I don’t want anyone to die of water overdose, so my next couple of posts I’m ignoring water issues. That said, I figured a good way to kick off water month would be to gather all things water of Tree Hugging Family past, and bring them to your attention. Also, it’ll save Peggy and I some time; we won’t have to repost on old school topics.

Your Water Footprint

Your Water Footprint

H20 Conserve offers a quick test to help you understand your water footprint. It’s not just about low-flow shower heads. The test also looks at the hidden water use inside your food choices and driving habits.
I learned a few things when I took my test. If I “let my yellow mellow” I’d save 10 or more gallons of water a day. And if I didn’t eat meat or dairy, I could reduce my water use by hundreds of gallons a day. It takes 1,500 gallons of water to produce a pound of beef!

July is Water Conservation Month at Tree Hugging Family

We think water conservation is such an important issue, we’re devoting a whole month to it. We’ll still slide in a few other topics, but there’s so much to talk about when it comes to water.
This month, we’ll discuss water savings in the bathroom, kitchen, lawn and anyplace there’s water. Some topics include gray water, rain barrels, rock gardens, low-flow shower heads, leak checking, water bottles and more. I think we might even talk about composting toilets!
Since summer is a lazy month of trying to keep cool, we’re giving you a break from a green challenge. Yet, we want you …read more

Save Water In Your Yard & Garden

Save Water In Your Yard & Garden

Misuse of water isn’t just bad for the environment, it’s also bad news for your wallet. Here’s how to save water and still water efficiently.

Water at night. Or you could water in the early morning, but usually nighttime (devoid of sun) gives you less evaporation time, which means your water goes further.
Lose some grass: Reduce your lawn size by a decent amount when possible. Rocks, a patio, or drought resistant flowers use less water than your thirsty lawn.
Be extra careful when positioning your sprinklers. The sidewalk doesn’t need watering.
Mulch to prevent some evaporation – mulch holds water, sort of like …read more

One Small Step: Hang That Towel

One Small Step: Hang That Towel

Can you believe that some people still only use their towel once and then re-wash it! How crazy is that? Sadly, I’ve met quite a few people addicted to re-washing towels.

Assuming you’re clean after a bath or shower (let’s hope) then there’s no good reason not to hang that towel up, let it dry, and use it again. At my house we go about a week, sometimes more, with the same three towels – one for Cedar and two for me (my hair is long I gotta wrap it). This small step saves time, energy, detergent, and water.
If you have …read more
