Some experts recommend that you don’t give kids under five any sort of garden tools – not even kid sized tools. That said, Cedar had his first set of gardening tools at the age of one year, and he never put an eye out; not his own or someone else’s, so I’m not sure what to tell you.

I’m pro-gardening tools for kids. The experts may be trying to be too safe in this case. Plus what’s better, some decent gardening tools and outside play or toxic toys? Plenty of us give our kids toys of plastic and non-organic soft toys without batting an eye. In any case, I figured that after my how to garden with toddler post, I’d bring in some tool options.

When Cedar was little he had a little non-plastic hand tool set like this (which he adored):

This last set has a plastic watering can – why they couldn’t use another material is beyond me; however, the plus side of this set is that it’s got everything you need to get little kids hanging out in the garden, instead of inside.

I’m going to keep my eye open for some more eco-friendly kid garden sets. I know of one, but it’s not an all-inclusive set.
