What’s this contest about?:

ChicoBags, maker of yes, all things reusable bags, and Green Halloween, a non-profit, grassroots movement that was created by Celebrate Green author Corey Colwell-Lipson, in order to promote sustainable Halloween traditions teamed up to bring this contest to kids.

Children ages 1-13 are encouraged to enter the contest by submitting an original drawing best depicting the spirit of a Green Halloween. Artistic talent is not the focus of the contest, but the design that best captures the “spirit” of a Green Halloween is. The hope is that children participating will be inspired to make greener choices for Halloween and other celebrations throughout the year.

Images are due by October 24, 2009 – 5:00 PM Pacific Time. (Winner will be notified no later than 11/5/09.)

PRIZES!

If your child wins, her design will be printed on ChicoBags sold through retailers nation-wide and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Treeswing, a nonprofit organization that promotes healthy eating and lifestyle habits for children. (Last year’s bag was even featured on The Bonnie Hunt Show!). First and second place winners, as well as a runner up, will receive a variety of fantastic prizes including some of the most popular eco-friendly goodies and some shriek-worthy monetary awards to be announced in the coming weeks.

We’ve been snowed in officially for about a week now, and it’s getting pretty restless around here. You can’t even go for a walk because we have layers of frozen rain and snow, so walking around is iffy. Sigh. If you’re in this fix, or if maybe the kids are home on Christmas break, here are some cool eco-minded last minute Christmas crafts to try…

Above is the really neat paper star wreath. You can use recycled paper and gift wrap to make it. There’s also a really nice paper star napkin holder to make.

Grab a recycled glass jar and make a snow globe.

Recycle an old magazine or paperback book to make your own Santa.

Make this cute recycled reindeer above with an old plastic bottle and other bits and pieces.

If you have an old paper holiday napkins and tin cans laying around you can make some cool decoupaged holiday cans.

Bought too much packing popcorn this year? Use it to make a recycled popcorn wreath.

Above is a slightly bizarre, but good way to recycle light bulbs into holiday decor. Many types and examples available, and plenty of tips about how to work with delicate bulbs.

Get them to try out some Christmas crafts. The holiday season is always extra busy, so now may be the perfect time to make and store away some special holiday treats.

Green Halloween and ChicoBag are giving kids the opportunity to create art to be featured on reusable trick-or-treat bags sold across the US. The contest is open to kids ages 1-13. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the trick-or-treat bags will be donated to Treeswing, a non-profit organization that promotes healthy eating and lifestyle habits for children.

Important: The winning design will capture the essence of what a “Green Halloween” means. You don’t have to be a young Picasso to win!
