Green school clothing for the kiddos

As the start of school gets ever closer, school clothing is a concern. If you’re looking for low-budget school clothing that’s also a shade of green check out consignment shops, thrift store, or do a trade with other families with older or younger kids.

If you’re looking for decent priced green clothes that are new you’re more limited, because one, eco-friendly clothing can be more costly but consider that you want your kids in healthy clothes. Also, as noted here before green clothing manufactures seem to think people are either age birth to five or teen to adult. Kids clothes of the greener kind are WAY harder to find, but you do have a few options…

Check out normal stores BUT look for the organic label. I’ve found organics in my son’s size (he’s a typical eight year old size) at places like Sears and other department stores. Most of the time these stores don’t make it easy to find the eco-options, but there are often some available.

Earth Creations has bunch of tees for kiddos in nice designs (see above) and many are on sale for $10! Yup $10. Nice.

Hanna’s Dream – some insane sales on right now too!

Greenedge kids – lots of stuff even in size 12! Wow.

Sarah Waldo Organics – a bit more $ and girl based, BUT so cute; perfect for a special back to school piece or coat – sizes up to 10 I believe in most pieces.

Organic for Your Kids – UK based but has some older sizes.

Revenge Is… who I’ve reviewed here before now has a really cute kid tee for a good price.

Earth-Friendly Shoes for Kids

I’m following up our very weak eco-clothing for kids post with an even sadder look at youth shoes. There aren’t that many earth-friendly shoes for kids – and some who do have them make them in styles that no child I know would agree to wear; more slipper than shoe.

There’s lots for babies; ironic since babies don’t need shoes (sigh). I listed some sites, but you have to read through each though, not all shoes offered are eco-friendly.

Vegan ballet slipper – for those of you with tiny dancers in the house.

Organic clothing for kids who are older than toddlers – (good luck!)

It’s easy to find organic baby clothing, and somewhat easy to find adult organic clothing. Kids past the toddler stage are more difficult. Maybe it doesn’t sell well, or maybe parents feel like only babies need protection from chemicals in traditional fabrics, or maybe it’s just that the Hannah Montana obsessed generation will only buy organic if she does. I have no clue.

In any case, here are some ideas…

Garden Kids – small selection for eight years and under.

Earth Creations – organic tees

Downbound – Vegan, organic, Fair Trade, adult sizes only but in down to earth styles and smaller sizes that will appeal to teens.

Patagonia – selection of tees, some pants, sweats.

Kid Bean – decent collection – even some school uniforms.

Apparel of the Earth – teen – adult – baby friendly. No elementary kid sizes.

LAPSAKY Organic Cotton Baby and Children’s Clothing – up to age eight.

Earth Wear Organics – a complicated site to maneuver through, but does carry kid sizes.

Ohgeez – baby to size 10. Whew. Finally something for nine year olds.

Mission Playground – a kids section with good tops, but no bottoms.

Eco Sprouts – sizes up to 12! A decent selection, but babies still dominate.

The 411:

It appears that most clothing companies believe that families are made up entirely of babies and adults; with a couple of teens thrown in for good measure. It’s pretty lame. But, unless parents complain, nothing much will happen. Not enough people buy organic clothing.

There are other options. I have a 7 year old, so I’ll check out sites for small adult or tiny teen sizes – which works for shirts but not pants. Also, I’ll look at plain old stores online (or in person) because while some don’t advertise it, you can find organic kids clothing at these places, it just takes more time to look, because they also sell traditional fabrics.

Another option is to look at local head shops and eco-shops in your town. You can visit many a good hippie store and find goods for kids.

I’ll do an eco-friendly shoes for kids post soon to go along with this. We can’t have kids running around barefoot all the time.
