Simple Eco-Shoes
January 15, 2008 by Jennifer
I hate shoe shopping. Actually, I’m not a fan of any sort of shopping, but shoe shopping in particular. I’m not kidding. See this pair of shoes:

These are your basic Simple sneakers. About five years ago in Humboldt I ordered two pairs of the exact same color. I had to special order from a skate shop because these are men’s shoes so I needed extra smalls. But it was worth the extra ordering costs, because my two nice pairs of Simples have lasted me the last five years. Besides my trusty Simples I’ve also bought some sandals over the year, but only because I had to. I lived in million degrees New Mexico. Overall I like my Simples.
The other day one of my Simples went and died on me. Five years, so I guess it was due. Then I noticed my other Simples aren’t looking so hot either. What to do. Ah ha; order more Simples. I’m so predictable. Off I head to the Simple website where I see… Eco Simples! Cool. Now I can have green Simples. Take a look.
This pair is from the green toe collection. (Women’s):

The specs, from Simple, include:
- “Organic cotton/linen, printed wool, and wool felt uppers
- Bamboo linings
- Cushioned felt heel pad
- Molded latex outsole
- Rubbahyde rand
- Unfinished brass hardware
- Jute laces
- Removable natural latex pedbed with a cotton canvas cover
- Natural crepe rubber midsole
- Uses water based cements
- 100% post consumer paper pulp foot forms”
They also have the newer EcoSNEAKS line:

Stats on these are very cool. (And green).
- “Available in hemp
- Hemp uppers
- Organic cotton linings
- PET laces
- PET pedbeds
- Yes, that outsole used to be a car tire
- Vulcanized rubber sidewall, toecap, and heelcap
- 100% post consumer paper pulp foot forms”
Recycled car tires, organic, and hemp, woo hoo. That’s a great shoe. And it looks just like my good old Simples so my brain won’t go into too much shock over new shoes.
The kid’s green shoes (Green Piggies) are especially cute. Like the Infant’s Weebit or Kid’s Toeday.

The above children’s shoes are made with the same sorts of green care that the adult shoes above are made with; i.e. hemp, organics, recycled car tires, etc. Simple also makes eco-sensible shoes for men.
I’m feeling a little better about having to buy new shoes now. I may even go totally nuts and buy two different styles. Now, that’s some shoe excitement.

Thanks. I’ll check them out. I also can’t stand shoe shopping. My last new pair (New Balance) have turned into a failure because they make my left big toe numb and sore. I know… weird. And it didn’t happen until I’d been wearing the shoes for a few weeks.
This is very timely for us. We all need new shoes.
hippies wear shoes??
