Recycling Posts From Yesteryear

As Jennifer mentioned in her April poll results post, we’re going to discuss recycling a bit more. But, have you checked out the archives for the Recycle category?
It’s full of lots of good info, and I pulled out a few that might particularly interest you. Jennifer wrote the first three posts below a few months ago, before I joined Tree Hugging Family. They deal with specialized recycling questions, like what to do with prescription bottles.

Do you have any recycling questions?

This is more of a reusing question…I have a huge jug w/a nice handle that can’t be recycled b/c it’s #7. I was thinking of using it for dry storage but a friend said that # is the worst for leaching. So I just throw it out…? I guess it would make a good watering jug but I was wondering what you thought about the leaching of #s other than 1 and 2.
That’s a long question. Personally, I’d just use it for watering plants, or some other non-human/pet use. If it’s newer, you can take it back to where you got it maybe.
Here’s one article (easy read) about it. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/326907_plastic09.html
DramaMama, #7 is a composite of different plastics. That’s why it can’t be recycled. What came in it? I don’t see this one used for food much.
From what I understand, the worst one for leaching is #3 — PVC. But for a human water container, I have switched to SIGG, avoiding all plastics.
