Proper Disposal of Oil

July 8, 2008 by Peggy

sewer.jpgJust one gallon of oil poured down the sewer can contaminate 1 million gallons of fresh water, says The Nature Conservancy. The EPA estimates that 1 million gallons of water is a year’s supply for 50 people.

Why is used motor oil bad for water?

It can contain toxic chemicals and heavy metals. Plus, it just doesn’t degrade very well or quickly.

Even if you already dispose of oil properly, now is the time to teach your children this important lesson. According to the EPA, “If all the oil from American do-it-yourself oil changers were recycled, it would be enough motor oil for more than 50 million cars a year.”

And it’s not just car motor oil that can be recycled. Oil from lawnmowers, motorcycles, boats and farm equipment may also be recycled. Auto parts stores and oil change locations typically accept used motor oil for recycling.
