Pesticide-Free Wasp Solution: Make a Wasp Nest!
May 22, 2008 by Peggy
Noreen over at Hankering for Yarn is a very imaginative person — always coming up with new creations and funny names for them.
She has now ventured into making wasp nests! And she’s not crazy. She’s concerned about using pesticides to kill wasps. Those nasty chemicals are bad for our important friends like bees. Read more about how pesticides are contributing to bee colony collapse disorder.
Hanging a fake wasp nest can be a very effective method of obtaining wasp-free zones inside your garden, porch or other area. Apparently, wasps don’t like company.
If you crochet, you’ll want to hurry over to Noreen’s post, Crocheted Wasp Nest for her pattern. If you’re not into making your own, then you can purchase fake wasp nests online. However, this is just a darn good time to take up crocheting for the bees!

Thank you so much for linking, Peggy! I am really hopeful that lots of people will find pesticide free ways of making their outdoor spaces more comfortable. Crocheting the wasp nests does help.
Now, if I could just crochet away those rotten mosquitoes! LOL!
I decided to have craft time with my grand daughter so we blew up a baloon and made a paper mache fake nest. It took about 3 hours to complete over days so lost the little ones interest. It looks very realistic but I found an easier way. Scrunched up a ball of news paper into the approximate shape I wanted. Duck taped the heck out of it, made folds on second layers in order to simulate the horizontal design of layering that you find on real wasp nests. painted light grey and voila, this one looks very real. I glued a 1 inch square of flat magnet to the top so it sticks to the metal sofit on the house. No more wasps and I have a realistic look, even much more so than the waspinator. The whol;e project took about half hour to construct. I can send pictures if interested, just email me.
