Pack Your Kids An Eco-Lunch

October 7, 2007 by Jennifer

Lunchopolis is a company that makes it easy to help eliminate all that garbage produced by school lunches. Their site reports that 3.5 billion pounds of garbage is produced each year by typical lunchbox garbage.

You also need to think about the fact that the school lunches produce quite a bit of waste too (making the grand total of garbage likely much more than 3.5 billion pounds) which is why it’s so important to stop and think before packing your kids lunches.

Something else to consider is how food packaging (even reusable) is made. Some containers are more toxic than others — your kids do not need extra chemicals in their water bottles and sandwich boxes.

Here are some Lunchopolis stats:

  • Each set comes with; a lead-free insulated lunchsack, four nesting reusable food containers, and one 15 oz reusable drink bottle.
  • All the containers included are fully recyclable.
  • “Lunchopolis contains absolutely no pvc or lead. all of the materials used in the production of the Lunchopolis bag and containers conform to California proposition 65, the most stringent set of environmental controls in the nation.”
  • The plastics have been tested and will not leech chemicals into food or drink.
  • Vacuum sealed lids keep food fresh.
  • Dishwasher safe.

They are not recommended for microwaves — but most kids don’t microwave their lunches at school anyhow.

So far the sets come in Lime, Water, and Pink Polkadots. Lime is shown above and the other two I’ll post below.

The Lunchopolis website is neat; there’s a good Q&A section, and even healthy menu planning with downloadable recipes!

Here’s Monday’s menu to give you an idea:

Red quinoa with peas and pesto sauce (whole)
Peach and blueberry salad (half)
Mini mozzarellas (quarter)

Nice huh. You can find these great lunch sacks soon at Lunchopolis and currently at evitamins.

I thought these looked pretty great, but noticed that they contain BPA. I’d rather not risk it, and use a steel tiffin instead.

I think the best choices are cloth bags… they’re not as heavy and bulky in kids bags, they’re not glass, and they keep all the mess inside, even for wet items.
