National Parking Day in September
May 21, 2008 by Peggy

What are those people doing? Why, celebrating national PARK(ing) Day 2007. National PARK(ing) Day — a global effort to temporarily transform parking spots into PARK(ing) spaces — is coming up again in September 2008. The event is centered in San Francisco, and included more than 200 parks in around 50 cities worldwide last year.

Why create temporary public parks? To challenge people to rethink the way city space is used and to reinforce the need for urban open space.
Watch this video from the Sundance Channel to learn more, and then tell us what you think of this event.

I’ve never heard of this – what a fab idea. I love it. You know, Portland has a lot of park areas, more than most cities, in fact I believe the smallest park in North America is here – I should take a picture of it. Not that I think we need smaller park, just it’s kind of cool. I’ll have to see if there are any area events going on here. Very cool.
Jennifer, looks like Portland is on the list of places that participated last year. I didn’t know about this until I saw the video on Sundance Channel.
I’ve heard of that small park you’re talking about! I think you should take that photo. : )
Could someone please tell me the exact dates for this as it seems to be different on different websites, 18th september, 21st september. please can someone clarify this…
Terri, the new date is Sept 18, 2009. The link above still works. Maybe you’re looking at different cities or seeing some old dates from last year?
