How To Recycle Blue Jeans
I actually never give recycled blue jeans much thought. If you’re me you recycle blue jeans like this:
- Buy an old pair of bell bottoms from a thrift store, they’re already in bad shape, but hey for $3 they have a taker. Bonus you get to quit shopping.
- Wear them all the flipping time.
- Blue jeans get too big in the waist from repeated washings. Wear a belt.
- Keeping wearing them until the knees fall out. Clumsily try to iron on patch, you’re no good at it, but that doesn’t stop you from trying.
- Shoot there’s a hole in the butt. Hmmm. Embroider tiny flowers on the hole.
- Three years later they literally fall apart in the washer and you’re forced to cut what’s left into seriously small cleaning rags.
- Cry because you finally got them just how you like them comfort wise. You WILL NEVER find their equal. NEVER.
- Mourn them for three week before realizing you should get to the thrift store because one cannot live in dresses alone (not with a seven year old who likes to go roller blading anyhow).
That’s me. There’s never any jean left to recycle. However, maybe some of you like to wear things a more suitable amount of time. Maybe some of you are normal.

My grandma makes cards out of them. She takes blank cardstock, pastes the pocket on the front, and decorates. You can then use the little pouch to hold gift cards, money, tickets, and other little things you’re giving to the recipient. They’re so cute!

Now that is cute. I bet little kids especially would like that. They’re so into pockets.

Is there any place where I can actually RECYCLE jeans….not reuse or repurpose or recreate; I want to get rid of them altogether. I know that denim insulation can be made, but where can my dirty jeans with holes be donated?

Pessimist,
You can give those jeans a good wash and donate them to a charity like The Salvation Army. Normally clothes that have holes or stains aren’t accepted, but wearable jeans with holes are in style, so they may want them.
Another thing you can do is watch out for retail stores which run specials — Bring in your old pair of jeans for $20 off a new pair, etc.
