Holiday weather trivia of the day
July 12, 2008 by Jennifer
I thought the kids would enjoy this semi-useless weather trivia.
Q. If you wanted to plan a picnic today and also wanted to be sure it wouldn’t rain, where could you go?
Do you know?

Oregon. Which seems like a crazy contradiction to everything you hear about “rainy” Oregon, but it’s true. Actually, if you want to get technical, you’d have to go to Salem, Oregon. Today in Salem is Rainmakers Day. Rainmaker Day is an official holiday. It’s the only day of the year in Salem that’s had no measurable rain since the National Weather Service began keeping records in 1892. It’s a big deal because it rains a lot in many parts of Oregon; even in the summer. However, July 12th has been dry for something like 116 years now.
I’m not a huge fan of Salem myself, (understatement) but there are some nice parks there, so you could plan a decent picnic. By the way; no, I’m not some offbeat holiday trivia buff. I only know about this holiday because someone I used to know has a birthday today, so I always remember the date, and holiday. Now you can take this bit of useless holiday trivia and impress your friends at parties!
