Green Your Dog or Cat with Pet Promise
March 23, 2008 by Peggy
I’m not often impressed with pet food companies, but Pet Promise is up to something different.
Pet Promise is one of the first pet foods with US-source verified meat and poultry with NO animal by-products, rendered meat, meals, growth hormones or antibiotics. They know exactly where their protein comes from — a natural family farm or ranch that uses sustainable agricultural practices (instead of factory farming — raising a very large number of animals in confinement). Visit the We Promise page for more info. Pet Promise food can be found at Wild Oats, Whole Foods and Petco.
The company also has a very cute Pets for the Planet section on their website. It includes features like Green Pet Tips and a Green Pet Report Card. I haven’t graded my kitty Choco yet, but it looks like a good pet project. You can also enter the Pet Promise sweepstakes for a chance to win a year’s supply of pet food.
The guy in the photo is Dr. Andrew Weil with his two Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Jambo and Daisy. Dr. Weil, a pioneer in the field of integrative medicine, helped launch Pet Promise. He’s what he has to say:
“Factory farms are major offenders of the environment today. The amount of
residues from antibiotics and hormones that goes into the water tables is
significant. By choosing pet foods made with meat and poultry
protein sourced from family farms, you are sending a message about these
practices, and helping to do something positive for the environment.”
Have you thought about how the meat in your dog or cat’s food is raised? Does family farm sourcing for pet food appeal to you?
If you’ve tried Pet Promise, please let us know what you thought.

I LOVE Dr. Weil, I’ve read all his books. He rocks. Had no idea about this pet deal though – I wonder why
