Green Yard Renovations: Composting for Soil Health
February 12, 2008 by Jennifer
Well, I was going to discuss compost for green soil renovations today but Peggy did a little something like that today already. Cool beans – because less work for me…
Actually we could write about nothing but compost; it’s a large topic. Since you may be newer to composting though let’s not get nuts. Here are some basic tips about how compost can improve your soil.
- Mainly, the gist of compost, is that it helps your soil to absorb rainwater and supports growth.
- Compost adds nutrients and structure to soil while feeding the growth-happy organisms that already exist in soil.
- Compost conserves water because it increases your soil’s capacity for holding water and allows more water overall to get deep within the soil.
- You can buy compost, but a better option is to make your own compost. You already have tons of garbage that would make great nutrient rich compost.
- You can even make low-work compost which is simply spreading leaves, grass clippings, and other green-yard left-overs over and into your soil. This is not as good as traditional mixed compost, but helps a lot to create healthy soil.
Compost is a big fat topic – one week we’ll have to do nothing but look at compost. But for now, just know that for better soil, without chemicals, that compost is your number one tool.

Agreed. Compost is a fascinating topic that is also incredibly useful and environmentally friendly.
I’ve heard that apartment folks like me can buy worms for composting out on the balcony, etc.
However, I am just as afraid of worms as you are of spiders!
Commenter Matt above is just posting to promote his website, the content and idea for which he stole from us.
Hmmm, if it’s true it’s not cool – although, using your own name would be better than using “Organic Compost Tumbler” because that’s something that I’d normally mark as spam. But I also hate scrapers so I’m posting this so I can remember to go look later (at both sites) when I have more time. Thanks for the heads up.
A pleasure to look at, go on with this! Thanks!
