Green Holiday Gift Guide: Great Books for Kids

by Jennifer on December 10th, 2007

My favorite gifts as a kid were books. I know not all kids like getting books but the following books are good choices if you do go this route. All of these are eco-savvy, fun, and well written.

A Kid’s Winter EcoJournal: With Nature Activities for Exploring the Season by Toni Albert (there are also other season activity books available).

A Hot Planet Needs Cool Kids by Julie Hall

Blue Potatoes, Orange Tomatoes (how to grow a rainbow garden) by Rosalind Creasy

Below is what I gave Cedar, my son, last year. He’s big into rocks and the earth and he’s loved these books.

Let’s Go Rock Collecting by Roma Gans

Smithsonian Handbooks: Rocks & Minerals by Chris Pellant

I briefly considered getting my nephews kid books about recycling, but I thought it might come off as strange since the parents don’t recycle.

Don’t you think? I feel that is a bit of pushing my values on others, but maybe I’m being too paranoid!

You know Peggy; I don’t think that’s value pushing. Recycling isn’t so much a value as it is a basic life task. Sort of like a health issue than religion. Well, it is a value but it’s not like pushing little Noah Arc kid books on people who don’t celebrate the corresponding religions. You know. Plus maybe the parents just don’t know — maybe you should get them a book :)

Thanks Jennifer. I keep picturing the little two-year-old looking up at his Mommy and asking, “We recycle?”

Then, the Mommy hating me. Well, maybe not.: )
