Green Gift Guide: Tree of Life Art

by Jennifer on November 5th, 2007

The Double Tree of Life Wall Sculpture from Gaiam Fair Trade is not an inexpensive holiday gift (it’s not that bad actually) but it’s fair trade, will last forever, and it’s beautiful. This is one of those really special gifts for someone amazing in your world.

“Haitian artisans take clean 55-gallon oil drums and flatten them into a “canvas,” draw a pattern in chalk and then hand chisel and hammer the metal into these intricate sculptures. Signed by the artist. Lacquer-finished for indoor or outdoor use.”

Wow! When I first looked at it, I saw only the interlocking branches. I stopped to look at it longer. One of the first things I became aware of was not of what I saw in the picture, but that in today’s world, no one wants to stop long enough to ’see’. The ’strong’ in today’s speed with which people do things, think, etc., can be weakened to move like the rest do.

I’ve been there myself, felt ‘dizzified’ by too much randomized passing about here and there of seemingly random activities, sounds, that have little ‘depth’.

I saw in the picture a fluidity of lines, that weaved and interweaved among itself, with the flow of life in the birds and the plant or tree co-mingling together in harmony; all this in the midst of a world that’s spinning out of control.

Hopefully, we will all have run out of ‘answers’ to life’s significant questions and turn to ‘responses’ for hope and peace to return again…

Hannah, I think a return to calm would be nice. Striving for that in today’s world is hard but possible. Good goal for most people I think.

Thanks for stopping by for a visit and for your thoughtful comment.
