Gamers for Autism

by Jennifer on March 25th, 2008

This is not green news, but a good blogging pal of mine asked me to post about this website that supports Autism, so here’s the 411.

Info from her blog:

“There is a new website that is dedicated to recruiting people who enjoy playing video games and want to contribute to a good cause.

Gamers For a Cure is located at Gamers for A Cure and is open to all gamers who are 18 and older. For a donation of just $10 USD, you can help further awareness of Autism. You can join in tournaments, win cash and support the Don Earl Early Childhood Development Center.”

If you know someone who is into gaming this may be a good way to play and help out a cause at the same time.

Personally, I’m glad to see this because thus far I’ve had some major issues with how the gamers I know act. No offense to gamers who may not act obnoxious, but I’ve seen too many families broken up by online gaming. This is a new twist - a way to help out others combined with gaming, that I haven’t seen before.  You can learn more at the FAQ section of the site.

We’re a big gamer family, and our youngest was diagnosed with high-functioning autism, so this is a really neat way for us to get involved with an issue that hits close to home. Thanks for passing it on, Jen.

lol! I just read a few posts down, JENNIFER. Why didn’t you say anything about people shortening your name? I don’t think I’ve ever spelled the whole thing out. Why? I think my own full name is pretentious and prefer when people call me a nickname instead. Go figure. I’ll try to remember, in any event. ;)

Ha, funny. I like Hilary and Hil, it’s all good.

Everyone thinks it’s ok to shorten names like mine and yours, which I never understood, I don’t go around shortening folks names. But I basically don’t make a scene because I’d be making a scene my live-long life. In person, I’ll usually say something though. What I usually go by is how people sign their names on forums and stuff like that. Then I know if they mind their name being shortened.

Jen is one million times better than “Jenny” which I also get so no worries.

I’m glad that link is useful - the blog pal who sent it to me is cool, so it’s likely a good deal. I just don’t know that much about gaming.

Thank you so much, Jennifer! I appreciate it a lot, my daughter is autistic so this is a big thing for us here at home.

Also, about the name thing…I hate it when people call me Jules or Julia and I always point it out! In person or online. It’s annoying, mainly because of someone who used to call me that a long time ago.

Hmm, I got called Peggy Sue so much in school I just gave up on the name corrections. Peg doesn’t bother me.

It’s Margaret that bugs me. My name isn’t Margaret, not that there’s anything wrong with that. How Peggy is short for Margaret I’ll never understand.

@Peggy Peggy Sue is totally obnoxious - unless of course it really is your name. I think Peggy used to be short for Margaret? Maybe. I like Margery. Not that you can use that info for anything. I’m sticking to Peggy; Peg sounds like a board game.

@Julie Anytime, Jules would make me mad too.

No, my maiden name is Peggy Lane Harris. It was supposed to be Penny Lane for the Beatles song, but my dad didn’t like Penny. No Sue, but my fourth grade teacher always called me Peggy Sue.

I think the deal is that there aren’t many people my age named Peggy. I never went to school with another Peggy.

I love the name Lane. One of my best friend’s in NM was a Lane (boy though), and Cedar came close to being a Lane, not a Cedar. That’s cool. And the Beatles are of course neat-o.

Well, I’m glad you went with Cedar. I love it.

My daughter’s name is Strata, and one day at the park … we met a little boy named Ocean. How is cool is that? So the water met the sky, and they played until the sun went down.

@Hil, NO WAY! Ocean was on my short list of boys names too. But we decided on Blue for a last name and Cedar Blue is so much less corny than Ocean Blue - I’m hippie, but that might make people think I’ve gone too far hippie. That’s it, this thread has gotten very off topic, I’m doing a name post tomorrow.

Oh, and along with your story Hil, when we lived in Humboldt, one of Cedar’s best little friends was a girl name Sequoia. How funny is that. Both of them living in the land of the Redwoods. I might use your story in my name post.

Weirder twist … our next town over is called Humboldt. o_O

Okay, that’s one too many coincidences for me. I’m out. LOL

Well, my formal name is actually Marcia, as in Marcia, Marcia, Marcia. Real fun.
