Free Yourself: Get Rid of Disposable Bathroom Cups

February 18, 2008 by Peggy

If you want to get rid of a disposable item that may be lurking in your house and on your shopping list, consider banning the disposable bathroom cup.

Whether they are made of paper or plastic, disposable bathroom cups create an abundant amount of waste. Even if you recycle them, you are still using energy.

What are the alternatives? I don’t like cupping my hands under the faucet, and forget putting my mouth under the sink. I see some people do this, but it just isn’t for me.

alternativebathroomcup.JPGThe easiest alternative is probably to take stock of your glasses. Choose a small one that you don’t mind assigning to the bathroom. Espresso cups, jam jars or juice glasses are ideal for this. If you want something prettier, try shopping at an antique store for a cute little teacup. There are lots of options. And you don’t have to wash it every day. Use your judgment.

What does your bathroom cup look like? If you have them, are you thinking about getting rid of your disposable bathroom cups?

Because there’s only two of us, and we each have our own mouth rinse, we just use the lids of those. We rinse them with hot water. We never have other cups in there. We can recycle the mouth wash bottles (we make sure to buy natural and recyclable types).

I never used paper cup growing up so when I moved to college I bought a cute frog glass and have used that ever since. Maybe since I never used one before the thought of buying some as an adult never came to mind.

Jennifer, mouth rinse lids are a great idea!

N&J, I think disposable cups are part of a germ-free trend (throw it away so you don’t get germs), but it’s silly. Soap works! The frog glass sounds cute.
