Blog Action Day: Fight Global Poverty with Fair Trade

by Peggy on October 15th, 2008

Fair Trade empowers people around the world. It helps the very poor, but it is not charity.

When you purchase a Fair Trade product, you’re making the choice to help prevent or amend poverty in many places of the world. Not only that, but Fair Trade promotes environmental sustainability and safe, healthy workplaces.

Choosing Fair Trade sends a very clear message that you care about the working conditions of those who grew or manufactured your product. You’re saying you want to stamp out the poverty of those who’ve been putting up with meager pay and deplorable working conditions for far too long.

Please learn more about Fair Trade at the Fair Trade Federation and Fair Trade Certified.

I choose fair trade products whenever I can. If it’s choosing between fair trade and organic I choose the fair trade.

Although, sometimes by creating a “fair trade” pricing, that product is no longer chosen because of it cost to value, and then NO products are sold, and the people are even worse off.

    Step cautiously

I have started searching out fair trade chocolate and coffee. I find that I can’t afford most fair trade clothing at this point, but I am careful about country of origin in my clothing picks.

I’ve seen widely varying accounts of how effective fair trade certification is, so I try to buy local first, but I do look for fair trade versions of some products (such as chocolate and coffee).

I’ve heard a bit about fair trade but so far haven’t actually seen anything in any of the stores I frequent. Is this something that is readily available or is it easier to find online.

There is an area about one hour from where we live. It has many fair trade stores in one site. We shop there whenever we are able. Thanks…..Cindi

I managed a fair trade shop for a year. Here is how prices end up so high:

#1 Fair price to the producer is higher than an unfair price
#2 Import costs (greater for small businesses than big businesses)
#3 Marking up enough to stay in business

Our little international shop did okay and managed to keep products affordable, so long as we stayed small (like limited store hours and volunteer labor), but when we tried to increase our market so we could expand our relationships with international producers, our little place went bust after four years.
