Earth in Mind
Earth in Mind, On Education, Environment, and the Human Prospect is a book I think everyone can benefit from. David W Orr wrote it back in 94 but the issues presented are still highly relevant. It’s one of my favorite books on education. Also, it appears that he reissued it in 2004. I have the old school copy though.
This book fits in quite a bit with my thoughts on education. We’re an unschooling family - which means my son doesn’t go to school, and we don’t use a set or scheduled curriculum. Unschooling is a big old topic; way too involved for a post (or really fifty posts) so if you’re interested you can visit Radical Unschooling.
Earth in Mind, talks about the problem of education - not the problems within education - which is an important distinction. This book contains a collection of essays; more so than actual chapters, that cover issues like the current atmosphere in education, the lack of eco-sense in our educational formats, and the drive for the wrong causes in education.
About the book:
The best way to get a feel for this book is to read some excerpts. One, because I’m the worst reviewer on the planet - I’m horribly NOT objective. Two, his book covers a lot. His first few chapters really set the tone of the book though, so I pulled some text.

You can see more about getting this book at Island Press. Or read some more from the book right here.

Sounds like a great book. Thanks for sharing passages, I love being able to read some of the books themselves when deciding if I’ll like it. :) Add it to my list now!

Summer, me too - I like when people offer the opportunity to see parts of the book before hand. It’s better than getting a style of writing you don’t care for. Thanks for visiting :)
