Cutting Down Trees for No Good Reason….?

See this lovely tree:

Nice right? Tall, well shaped, watching over what could be a blank field. Well, my pal Scott over at Health and Men has a sad story up about this tree today. One you should head over to read. Scott usually blogs about health and music, but today this story put him in a mood, so he veered off topic to cover it. And I’m glad he did. It’s a great, thoughtful post, that will make you think. Also, I like this post because if issues like one tree can’t affect someone, somewhere, well, just where does that leave us. It’s not just the green bloggers pulling for trees.

I don’t love the story, I don’t like the idea, but it makes you appreciate how trees can affect us, our thoughts, and our land. Read Scott’s post.

Have you ever lost a significant tree – or more than one?

My grandparents lived in a lovely old farmhouse for years and years, since the 50’s, I think. There were gorgeous trees in the front yard, a tire swing was there for all of us kids.

Huge, stately oaks, just perfect for shade, sitting under, and the view was perfect. The whole of the land, about 300 acres, was covered in trees like this from oak to southern persimmon.

They rented the place, should have tried to buy it back in the day because the local power company ended up buying the land in the mid ninties. All of the acreage for around 2 mil. The company just bulldozed everything. The creek through the land was dug deeper, killing the meandering beauty, no persimmons could ever be harvested again, and herbs my grandpa had used for his medicines for years, gone in less than a month.

Dang. Less than a month -that’s so sad. When I was a kid my favorite tree for climbing was chopped down so that some folks could build a house. I remember all the neighborhood kids creating such a scene, because we all loved this tree, but in the end, they still cut it down.
