Bath Soap Review: Pure & Natural

by Peggy on April 25th, 2008

Pure & Natural offers vegetable-based bar soaps in three natural scents: cleansing rosemary and mint, renewing grapefruit and pomegranate, and moisturizing almond oil and cherry blossom.

pn_home_18.jpgI choose the rosemary and mint soap. According to the packaging, the soap has 99% natural origin. It’s not too expensive. The price ends up being about $1.50 per bar, and it comes in a two-bar package. The soap is biodegradable and not tested on animals.

If you’re looking to score some baby’s breath for your garden, this is the soap to buy. The biodegradable and 100% post-consumer packaging is imbedded with baby’s breath seeds. Just plant it and add water!

Even if you don’t want baby’s breath, you can pass it on to someone else. Another thing I like about this company is that they make annual donations to World Wildlife Fund.

So, did I like the soap or what?

I was concerned about buying scented soap since I don’t usually like scented personal care products. In this case, I think the natural scent of rosemary and mint made all the difference. It’s very soothing, yet doesn’t linger or make me sneeze. And I feel clean after using this soap, not covered in perfume. It lathers well and rinses off easily. There’s not much more to say other than I have sensitive skin and this didn’t bother me.

I can’t think of much that I don’t like about this soap. They list all ingredients and use responsible packaging.

Check out my other post to see what Project Runway alumni Jack Mackenroth created with the soap packaging. And you can bid on it until May 1!

That soap sounds awesome. I make a lot of products, but buy some. I don’t usually buy soap though, however, this sounds cool, and I LOVE the packaging idea.

Well, it has to be cheaper to make your own soap, but I couldn’t resist trying this. Now I need to find someone who wants baby’s breath.

It’s actually not cheaper to make your own soaps. Technically it’s not much cheaper to make most homemade beauty products in the short term, because there’s a lot of stuff you use like oils, base, add-ins, and some special soap making equipment.

That said, once you start making homemade beauty items, it does become cheaper, because you always have stuff around. Like say, I wanted to whip up some toner - I could because I already have all the stuff. But could anyone?

That’s one reason I buy shampoo and conditioner (mostly - I make some too). But to make it non soapy costs more with time and everything, I could buy an $8 bottle of organic shampoo.

Jennifer, good point. As you can tell, I don’t make my own soaps. I’d have no place to store the stuff to make it with.

I seen these at wal-mart and really considered buying them. I didn’t know that the packaging has baby’s breath seeds in it! What a neat idea! I think I’ll pick some up the next time I’m out there. The scents were kind of nice too :)

    Thanks for a great review!

We’ve tried the Grapefruit & Pomegranate scent. We did really like this brand. Target also sells these. I’ll use then whenever I am out of the KMF soaps.

Jodi, I haven’t tried that scent, but I did recently buy the almond oil and cherry blossom. Haven’t used it yet.

I still need to check out Kiss My Face. Everyone seems to love it.

I found these soaps at the store yesterday and bought them as soon as I read the back and looked at the packaging. I was so happy to find out that it was all biodegradable! I was looking online to see what would grow if I planted the box… Thanks for the info, I can’t wait to have baby’s breath! The Almond/Cherry scent is great and it moisturizes my skin much better than my previous soap.

I bought this soap when it first came out. I thought the packaging was beautiful, it smelled great and I was satisfied with it as an actual soap in the shower. (Though it’s a two pack and the second one I haven’t used for showering. I just have it at my desk as an air freshener.) … I love that they donate to a good cause and I love that the packaging had baby’s breath seeds embedded. I thought that was genius… The only problem is, I planted it and it never grew. It’s been months now and nothing…. Admittedly, I’m not much of a green thumb, but other things I planted this year around the same time came up fine. I was disappointed about that and wondering if anyone else had the same experience?

Tee, thanks for your question. Hopefully someone can answer it. I gave my packages to my Mom since I don’t have a yard right now. I’m not sure if she’s planted them yet. I need to ask.

I’ve got another bunch I can give to someone else, and maybe I can find out.

Just some info to know in case supporting giant conglomerations and corporations that portray themselves as environmentally responsible unnerves you as it does me…the Pure & Natural Company is owned by the Dial Corporation. They have been manufacturing a line of products called Pure & Natural for over 20 years but they reformulated and repackaged it recently to get in on the green/natural beauty products market. They have been very careful to conceal this fact, but it’s difficult to really hide anything completely in the world of the internet. I looked everywhere for evidence of true ownership since their web site pure-natural.com is very vague. I found nothing until I tried a simple whois search. This reveals that the domain is registered to the Dial Corp.

Hi Jessie. Interesting. I guess independent companies are going extinct.

I tried to call the phone number on the Pure & Natural site to flat out ask them if they were owned by Dial. They aren’t open right now, but the message did direct me to dialcorp.com in case I needed MSDS sheets.

Seems Dial is trying very hard to conceal that they own P&N. Reminds me of Colgate’s ownership of Tom’s of Maine.

    Thanks for letting us know.

I picked up a bar of this at WalMart, but put it back because it had fragrance as an ingredient. I read I should avoid “fragrance” because of phthalates. Did I read the soap wrong or is fragrance okay?

  • Peggy
    Aug 25, 2008 at 3:28 pm

Lea, I can’t give you a definite answer, but I do know that fragrance doesn’t always mean phthalates. The problem is that some companies hide stuff within fragrances because they aren’t forced to say what that means. The ingredients for P&N do say fragrance (parfum).

Also, the soap is supposed to be 98% natural.

If I find more info, I’ll let you know.

@Gloria, another idea is to look online. Many green and natural based products can be found easier and often cheaper online.
