Backpacks – Do you really need a new one?
August 12, 2008 by Peggy
Lots of kids want a new backpack to go with the new school year. I remember that feeling when I was in school.
In some cases, the backpacks get too worn to reuse. In many other cases, kids just get sick of the old backpack.
Alternatives to buying a new backpack:
• Swap backpacks with a friend or sibling
• Patch up a backpack with a hole or reinforce broken straps
• Select something from a thrift store
If you’ve already bought a new backpack and your old one is in good condition, consider donating the used pack.
Your local Goodwill or Salvation Army would be happy to have a backpack in good condition. Or mail your backpack to Adventure 16 to help them with their non-profit wilderness programs for youth.

I don’t work for them or anything, but I know my SIL always gets a specific kind of backpack (it starts w/a J – seriously, I don’t want to sound like an advertisement!) that will replace the whole thing if it breaks at any time. She has found them broken at garage sales and sent them in for a new one! I think that is an awesome idea and I am planning to send in the one I used in college for my son. He won’t need it for a while, but it might come in handy before school…
DramaMama, it’s ok to name a brand name.
It’s those folks we’ve never heard of who spam us with ads that we don’t like.
