And the big fat anti tree hugging award of the week goes to…
Last night I was watching TV and saw that stupid Dixie commercial, the one with all the happy mamas. The one that notes you suck if real dishes come before your kids. I HATE this commercial. I was thinking that I’d have to wait around with my VCR to get this commercial on tape; but on a whim I checked YouTube, and apparently someone else felt the same way, because they posted it, with much the same feelings I have.
Honestly, this whole campaign is the most lame sales tactic that I’ve seen in a while. Playing on parent’s emotions to get them to use disposables. Seriously now. Maybe Dixie would like to comment on just how we are caring for our kids, or teaching them anything about the environment by saying “Use disposable paper plates.” Even if you can recycle some of the products, how much energy goes into making them, and what about the packaging? And when you get right down to it, it’s teaching our kids a really poor lesson in being a consumer toss and go society. Lame all around. Why not do the dishes together?
From the Dixie website:
“For Moms, great days include those extra-special surprises—little moments squeezed into the everyday circus of life. Sometimes it’s a walk in the park. Or an extra story at bedtime. And with products from Dixie, and help from our new Website, it’s easy to find them… It’s our mission to make your day a little easier, giving you more time to focus on what’s really important.”
Ah.. so heartwarming. I’m sure that those ten minutes we save by not filling the dishwasher is worth all that waste we’re leaving the next generation. Way to go Dixie.

I know, stuff like this continues to shock me, even though I know it’s out there.
@Peggy, maybe you can get them to do a pet parent commercial, “My cat comes before her darn glass dishes - that’s why I use disposables!” Ha. I shouldn’t give them ideas.

Jennifer, there’s a company that makes disposable pet food bowl liners! They are called Bamboo Feed & Toss.

Disgusting. I’ve written about them at Light Green Stairs.

@OuterBanksMom Thanks! Glad I’m not alone in my hate.

Well if we used Dixie plates, then my kids and I would miss the time we spend doing dishes together. As they get older, they are pitching in more (and without mom having to ask) and they *almost* have fun helping me do dishes. hehe My son asked my a few weeks ago if I was happy that he didn’t use the bathroom cups anymore & was saving money and the Earth. I said yep I was and asked if he missed having the cups. He said nah, it’s easier using my hand. LOL

Jodi thanks for the nice story - they should turn that into an anti-paper plate commercial. I like that your kids are getting it. Dixie uses their website to promote their cups as germ deterrents, so like if you don’t use them your kids will get sick; which is also a lame (and untrue) idea.
