A Green Lawn Mower — Remington Cordless PowerMower

by Peggy on May 19th, 2008

Is it almost time for a new lawn mower?

Consider a mower that doesn’t require gas and produces zero emissions. The new Remington Cordless PowerMower runs for about an hour on a single charge, and the battery lasts for around five years.

powermower.jpegSince I have no lawn, I haven’t tried this baby myself, but here’s what Remington says:

•Comes with two-year warranty
•Takes up to 10 hours to charge
•Features same blade tip speeds found on gas mowers
•Sells for $449.99 (but you’ll save on gas!)

You may not think of gas-powered lawn mowers as big polluters like cars, but they are.

According to studies, running a gas-powered mower for one hour produces the same amount of pollution as a 100-mile car trip. The EPA says that mowers may be responsible for 5% of the air pollution in the US.

Have you tried an electric lawn mower? What did you think?

When my husband and I purchased our first house six years ago, we agreed - we both HATE gas lawn mowers because of the exhaust. We started off with a people-powered reel mower, but I had trouble keeping a steady speed going up our long, sloped front yard. We still have it, but added an electric mower and a LOOOOONG extension cord to our gardening arsenal two years ago. We both love it. It’s light weight so I can handle it with no problem, it doesn’t make as much noise as a gas mower, there’s no nasty smell, and it does a great job on our lawn.

Pam, that’s great. I can’t stand the smell of gas mowers either. I guess with a cord you don’t have to worry about the battery being charged.

I have been using cordless electric lawn mowers since the mid 1990s. My first was a Ryobi. After 4 years the charging unit failed, and Ryobi had stopped making the product. I couldn’t get any parts to fix it, so I bought a Neuton. I have an acre, maybe 45% is lawn. I like the Neuton, and it’s extremely reliable, the only drawback is the narrow cutting path. I have several batteries that I keep charged so I can cut the whole yard in one day if I want. I just purchased a Remington cordless because I wanted something closer to the Ryobi. It has a larger cutting path and it’s not as heavy as the new Neuton 19 inch cordless. So far I’ve used it once, and I’m very pleased. It is a lot closer to a gas mower power-wise. Just hope it will prove to be as reliable as the Neuton. I will never buy another gas powered mower again. No one has to anymore, unless your yard is incredibly huge. There is a Canadian company developing an electric riding mower. Edmonds is their name. Let’s hope they succeed.
